Anjali Patil (32), a resident of Nilji village in Belagavi taluk, passed away following a Caesarean section at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) district hospital. Her family has accused the hospital of medical negligence.
Admitted on January 27 (Monday) for delivery, Anjali, who had been married for 12 years, was undergoing her first childbirth. Due to the absence of labor pains, the delivery was performed via Caesarean section. Her family claims her condition deteriorated post-surgery, and requests to transfer her to another hospital were ignored. They also alleged that consent for the procedure was not properly obtained and that they were made to sign blank papers. Family members and relatives staged a protest outside the mortuary.
BIMS District Hospital Director Dr. Ashok Kumar Shetty stated that Anjali was 40 weeks pregnant and admitted around 4 PM on Monday. Due to the high-risk nature of her pregnancy, a C-section was performed. He noted that during the operation, she experienced an epileptic seizure and a significant drop in blood pressure. “There was no medical negligence, and experienced doctors made every effort to save her. The exact cause of death will be determined through a post-mortem examination,” he said.
Dr. Shetty added that the hospital handles approximately 10,000 deliveries annually, with about half categorized as high-risk and requiring C-sections. Many complicated cases are referred from smaller health centers. The hospital has recorded three maternal deaths in the past three months, he confirmed.
