Urban Development Minister BS ‘Bairati’ Suresh has initiated a comprehensive investigation into six Smart City projects across Karnataka, excluding Bengaluru. This decision follows growing concerns over the quality and direction of the projects, particularly in cities like Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, and Tumkur.
During a recent review meeting, Minister Suresh expressed dissatisfaction over the disproportionate allocation of funds toward temporary infrastructure projects such as roads, drainage, and repairs, instead of permanent developments like smart schools, hospitals, and libraries. He highlighted these issues and directed the Urban Development Department Secretary to form a committee of independent experts.
This expert committee, comprising officials from various departments, technical specialists, and representatives from universities and the Indian Institute of Science, has been tasked with thoroughly investigating the projects and submitting a detailed report within three months.
The minister stressed the importance of prioritizing long-term assets, and brilliant schools equipped with advanced technology to support underprivileged children. He also warned against further lapses in project execution, citing dissatisfaction voiced by local representatives in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Shivamogga.
The Smart City initiative, which aims to foster sustainable and technology-driven urban development, is set to conclude by March 2025. This investigation’s findings will be crucial in evaluating the projects’ effectiveness and addressing any shortcomings.
