Tension flared up in Deshanura village of Bailahongala taluk in Belagavi district following a dispute over the construction of a Valmiki community hall on government land. The situation escalated into stone pelting, damage to houses, and allegations of assault. Prompt police intervention helped avert a major incident. Complaints have been lodged, and police security has been intensified in the village.
The incident occurred during survey work for the proposed Valmiki Bhavan. Members of the family of Sadashiva Bhajantri objected to the construction being carried out near an SC household, leading to a heated argument. It is alleged that the Bhajantri family initially used abusive language against members of the ST community.
Angered by this, a group from the community gathered and went to Sadashiva Bhajantri’s house. Despite him remaining indoors, the crowd allegedly pelted stones at the house and broke open the door using wooden logs. Allegations have also been made that family members were assaulted, women were verbally abused, and threats were issued.
It later emerged that the land earmarked for the Valmiki Bhavan did not belong to the Bhajantri family and was government property. However, opposition to the construction triggered unrest, which soon escalated into violence. Police from Nesaragi police station rushed to the spot and managed to control the situation, preventing further damage. Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan later visited the village and reviewed the situation.
In the aftermath of the clash, heavy police deployment has been made in the village, with two KSRP platoons stationed as a precaution. Protesters raised slogans in the presence of the police, demanding action against Sadashiva Bhajantri. Cases have been registered from both sides, and the SP said further action would be taken based on video evidence. Police continue to closely monitor the situation to prevent any further untoward incidents.
