Udyambag police on Tuesday arrested five out of 10 accused in a land fraud case in which two acres of a family’s ancestral property in Belagavi taluk were allegedly transferred to an outsider by impersonating the original owners at the sub-registrar’s office.
According to the complaint filed in November 2025 by Babu Gangaram Yallurkar, one of the eight original owners of the land in Survey No. 22/3 at Waghawade village, three of the co-owners had passed away long ago.
The complaint stated that the accused forged Aadhaar cards, fabricated land documents, and prepared a sale deed using fake signatures to carry out the transfer through the sub-registrar’s office. The disputed registration was done on March 18, 2023, at the Belagavi South sub-registrar office, when Padmanabha Gudi was serving as the sub-registrar.
Udyambag Inspector D.K. Patil confirmed the arrests and said five accused, including a woman, had been taken into custody and that the investigation was in progress.
Following reports on the issue, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan directed all sub-registrars in the district to strictly verify Aadhaar authentication of parties involved in property registration. The order stated that the move was aimed at preventing impersonation, protecting public and government property, maintaining public order, and curbing criminal activities.
Earlier, district minister Satish Jarkiholi had instructed the administration to form a joint task force comprising senior police and revenue officials to investigate the alleged large-scale creation and misuse of duplicate Aadhaar cards in the district.
