A tragic incident unfolded in Turakarshigihalli village of Bailahongala taluk in Belagavi district, where a man hacked his wife to death and later took his own life, just a week after the death of his mother. The shocking episode reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the wife wanting to visit her parental home.
The incident occurred within the limits of Kittur police station and has left the entire village in shock. According to information, the couple had an argument when the husband objected to his wife going to her native place. The disagreement escalated, resulting in a fatal outcome.
The deceased have been identified as Shivappa Sannabasappa Kambali (46) and his wife Yallava Shivappa Kambali (40), residents of Turakarshigihalli village. It had been a week since Yallava’s mother passed away, and she had planned to prepare sweets and visit her hometown as part of the religious rituals. Shivappa, however, opposed the plan, leading to a heated argument between the couple.
On Friday morning, after Yallava had prepared food for her son and was about to leave for her hometown, Shivappa attacked her with an axe, striking her on the neck and back. She died on the spot due to severe injuries. Following the attack, Shivappa also died by suicide.
Family members and villagers who came to know about the incident alerted the police. Kittur CPI Shivananda Gudaganatty reached the spot and conducted an inspection. The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and a case has been registered for further investigation.
Local residents said the couple had been arguing over minor issues for a long time, and the tensions increased after the death of Yallava’s mother due to the disagreement over visiting her hometown. The conflict eventually led to the tragic incident.
The couple is survived by three children, who have now been left without parents. The village remains in mourning, with residents stressing the need for dialogue and patience within families to prevent such tragedies. Police are also probing whether there were any other factors behind the incident.
