Three workers were killed, and five others sustained serious injuries in a boiler-related accident at Inamdar Sugars near Marakumbi in Bailhongal taluk. The incident falls under the limits of the Murgodha police station.
The accident occurred in compartment number one of the sugar factory when an explosion reportedly took place during wall repair work. Following the blast, hot molten material from the boiler spilled onto the workers present at the site.
The deceased have been identified as Deepak Munavalli (31) from Nesaragi village in Bailhongal taluk, Sudarshan Banoshi (25) from Chikkamunavalli village in Khanapura taluk, and Akshay Chopade (45) from Jamkhandi.
Those injured are Bharat Basappa Sarawadi (27) of Godachinamalki village in Gokak taluk, Raghavendra Gilihosura (35) from Gokak city, Manju Teradala (35) of Athani, Manju Kajagar (28) from Aravalli village in Bailhongal taluk, and Guru Tamannavar from Mareguddi village in Bagalkot. All the injured, who suffered severe burn injuries, were first taken to Bailhongal and later shifted to a private hospital in Belgaum.
District Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan visited the hospital where the injured were undergoing treatment. Speaking to reporters, he said the incident occurred around 2 pm and involved eight workers injured after hot material fell on them. One injured person was admitted to Bailhongal Hospital, while the others were shifted to a private hospital in Belgaum with zero traffic clearance. He added that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined and an investigation will be conducted based on the complaint received.
