Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar on Wednesday announced that Belagavi district would be bifurcated to form a new Chikkodi district by December 31.
Speaking after receiving a representation from members of the Chikkodi Zilla Horata Samiti in the city, Hebbalkar said the division was necessary to ensure government schemes reached people effectively. She added that the state had already decided to create the new district and she fully backed the move.
The Samiti delegation also met MLC Channaraj Hattiholi and former MLC Mahantesh Kavatgimath with their demand. Present on the occasion were Samiti president S.Y. Hanji, secretary Rudrappa Sangappagol, Sanjay Patil and others.
