A case has been registered against the Bassapur Gram Panchayat president in Hukkeri taluk, Belagavi, for allegedly marrying a 15-year-old girl. The marriage, which reportedly took place on November 5, 2023, came to light only recently.
The complaint lodged at Yamakanamardi police station states that the accused, identified as Bheemashi Kalimani, married the minor last year, and she gave birth five months ago. Based on the confirmation of the allegations, police have booked him under the POCSO Act.
The Child Rights Commission has instructed the Belagavi Zilla Panchayat CEO and the District Child Protection Officer to file cases and ensure the safety of the girl. Despite directives to the deputy commissioner, child protection officials, and the Women and Child Welfare Department, no action has been taken so far.
Although child rescue teams visited Bassapur village on four occasions, the accused has not been traced. A woman activist from Belagavi alleged that he has evaded arrest due to his association with the ruling Congress party.
