Police in Belagavi opened fire on an accused criminal after he allegedly attacked officers with a knife during an operation in the early hours of Saturday.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Bheemashankar Guled said the accused, identified as Ramesh Kilar, who is facing several serious criminal cases, attacked Constable Sharif Dafedar with a knife while being secured by a police team. Despite a warning shot being fired into the air, Ramesh attempted to attack another officer.
In self-defence, Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kittur shot him in the leg. Both the injured constable and the accused were rushed to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) for treatment.
According to officials, Ramesh has over seven cases against him, including four dacoities, a robbery, a gang rape case, illegal possession of arms, and multiple non-bailable warrants.
The incident, which occurred in the Channamma Kittur police station limits around 6 am, has created tension in the area. The Kittur police have registered a case and stepped up the investigation.
