The Lokayukta police on Thursday arrested Fayyaz Ahmed Shaikh (52), a Geology Officer in the Department of Mines and Geology, after he was caught accepting a bribe.
According to a complaint by Sheetal Gopal Sanadi from Athani taluk, Shaikh had initially demanded ₹50,000 for issuing a mineral transport license linked to seized sand. The amount was later bargained down to ₹15,000.
Acting on the tip-off, the Lokayukta team trapped Shaikh and seized the bribe money while he accepted it. He was taken into custody, and a case (No. 14/2025) has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Belagavi Lokayukta Police Station. Inspector Sangamesh Hosmani led the operation.
In another account, it was reported that B.K. Magadumma, known to Sheetal Sanadi, had undertaken CC road work in SC Colony, Ainapur of Kagawad taluk. He had approached the Mines and Geology Department via the Task Force Committee for release of sand confiscated at Aigali village in Athani. Following Sanadi’s complaint, Shaikh was trapped while taking the negotiated bribe of ₹15,000.
The raid was carried out under the supervision of Lokayukta SP Hanumantharaya, with DySPs B.S. Patil, Bharatha Reddy S.R., and their team assisting in the operation.
