Belgaum airport has come into the spotlight as Karnataka ramps up efforts to expand its aviation sector, with a push for international status for Belgaum and Hubballi airports alongside plans for three international airports across the state.
Push for international status to Hubballi and Belagavi airports:
Hubballi and Belagavi airports are already equipped with the necessary infrastructure, including terminals capable of handling 2,400 passengers per hour, upgraded lighting systems for night operations, and runways suitable for Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. Granting international status to these airports could significantly improve air connectivity for North Karnataka and nearby regions.
Second international airport for Bengaluru:
With Bengaluru’s current airport among the busiest in India, the need for a second international facility has grown urgent. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already shortlisted three possible sites, and a final decision from the Centre is awaited.
State Infrastructure Minister M.B. Patil, during his recent visit to New Delhi, met Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu and pushed for a swift decision on the matter.
Vijayapura airport ready, awaits clearance:
The Vijayapura airport is ready for operations, but services are yet to begin as environmental clearance from the Union Ministry is pending. Minister Patil has urged the Central Government to expedite the approval process.
Variation in passenger traffic:
As per data available up to October 2025, Hubballi airport recorded a 37.1% rise in passenger traffic, driven by regular services, efficient connectivity, and passenger-friendly flight schedules.
In contrast, Belagavi airport saw a 12% drop in passengers, mainly due to Star Air suspending services and a decline in flights under the UDAN scheme.
Hubballi airport sees growing appeal:
Advisory committee member Kaustubh Sanshikar highlighted that improved services and smart technology adoption play a key role in attracting passengers, with Hubballi standing as a strong example.
With the state planning three new international airports and upgrading existing ones, Karnataka’s aviation expansion is set to boost trade, tourism, and job creation in the near future.
