Agriculture Marketing Minister Shivanand Patil has announced that the state government will shut down the private APMC market, Jai Kisan Wholesale Vegetable Market, operating in Belagavi. He assured farmers that there is no need for confusion or concern on the matter.
Speaking at a meeting with leaders from the Bharatiya Krishik Samaj and Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha at the Agriculture Marketing Department office in Bengaluru on Wednesday, the minister stated that the government is firm on not allowing or supporting private APMC markets.
“If necessary, we will bring in legal amendments to facilitate the closure,” he said, adding that documentary evidence would aid the process. “Submit whatever documents you have. Our officials are also preparing reports, and the government will proceed without leaving any legal loopholes.”
Minister Patil further added that strict action would be taken against those found guilty of illegal commission collection and exploitation of farmers. A committee, including representatives of farmers, will be constituted to compile a detailed report.
Additionally, a meeting involving District Minister Satish Jarkiholi and Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh will be held to address the issue.
“As promised in our election manifesto, we are working to restore the APMC Act and revive government-run APMC markets across the state,” Patil reaffirmed.
The meeting saw participation from Bharatiya Krishik Samaj president Sidagouda Modagi, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha leader Chunappa Pujari, and former Belagavi APMC president Shivanagouda Patil, who urged the government to take prompt action.
