In a significant operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior doctor associated with the National Medical Commission (NMC) after he was caught red-handed accepting a ₹10 lakh bribe from representatives of a private medical college based in Belagavi, Karnataka.
The bribe was allegedly given in return for a favourable inspection report of the Belagavi institution. Acting promptly, CBI officials laid a trap and apprehended the doctor during the transaction. Following the arrest, searches were carried out at various locations, including Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Belagavi, leading to the recovery of ₹44.6 lakh in unaccounted cash.
A case was registered by the CBI on May 24, 2025, against the senior NMC assessor, two private individuals, and the Belagavi-based medical college. The investigation suggests the doctor accepted the bribe as part of an illicit deal to issue a positive inspection report.
CBI teams conducted raids at the residences and offices of the accused, seizing a total of ₹54.6 lakh in cash along with incriminating documents and digital devices.
The arrested official will be presented before a competent court. Further investigations are underway into possible links between regulatory authorities and private medical colleges.
