Intel Corporation has named Sachin Katti, originally from Belagavi, as its new Chief Technology Officer and Chief of Artificial Intelligence. The announcement, made via an internal memo from CEO Lip-Bu Tan, marks a significant leadership change aimed at strengthening Intel’s AI roadmap and boosting its position in the semiconductor sector.
Katti, an alumnus of St. Xavier’s High School in Belagavi, takes over from Greg Lavender, who is stepping down. His appointment has been met with pride by the Indian tech community, particularly in his hometown.
From Belagavi to Silicon Valley
After completing his early education in Belagavi, Katti earned his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay. He later pursued his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, finishing in 2005 and 2009 respectively. He has since built a strong reputation in the fields of wireless and networking technologies.
Prior to this promotion, Katti led Intel’s networking chip division and played a key role in advancing the company’s connectivity initiatives. His elevation comes as Intel seeks to catch up in the AI chip market, currently dominated by competitors like Nvidia.
Shaping Intel’s AI Strategy
In the CEO’s note, Lip-Bu Tan said,
“Katti is expanding his responsibilities to include the role of chief technology and AI officer for the company. As part of this, he will lead our overall AI strategy and AI product roadmap, as well as Intel Labs and our relationships with the startup and developer ecosystems.”
In his new role, Katti will head Intel’s AI strategy, covering generative AI, high-performance computing, and edge technologies. He will also lead Intel Labs and strengthen ties with startups and developers.
Global Achievement, Local Pride
Sachin Katti’s rise from Belagavi to a top executive role at one of the world’s largest tech firms is being celebrated back home. His journey stands as a testament to Belagavi’s contribution to India’s global talent force. As Intel focuses on redefining its role in the AI era, all eyes will be on Katti to lead this transformation.
