A 62-year-old man suffering from burn injuries, who was abandoned by his son at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) on March 22, passed away on Monday.
The circumstances surrounding how Satishwar, a Belagavi city resident, sustained the burns remain unclear. Over the past two years, BIMS has recorded 152 cases of elderly parents being abandoned at the hospital.
Following his death, authorities moved his body to the mortuary and attempted to reach his family using the contact number provided at admission, but received no response. Despite visiting his workplace, they were unable to trace any relatives. His son, who had admitted him, never returned.
Later, officials managed to contact Satishwar’s daughter in Goa, who arrived on Monday evening with her family and accepted the body. His last rites were conducted at the Sadashiv Nagar graveyard.
A month ago, BIMS had exposed the rising cases of elderly abandonment, prompting the government to revoke wills and property transfers in favor of children who abandon their parents.
