With summer setting in and water levels in the Ghataprabha River dropping, fear of crocodile sightings has gripped the region. Farmers heading to nearby fields for agricultural work are growing increasingly anxious due to the rising presence of crocodiles along the riverbanks.
Panic spread in Goodas village, Hukkeri Taluk of Belagavi district after locals spotted a massive crocodile—estimated to be 10 to 12 feet long—in the river’s shallow stretch. The intense summer heat over the past month has further aggravated the situation, forcing aquatic creatures like crocodiles out of the water. The reptile was seen resting on a sandbar exposed by the receding water.
While crocodile sightings are not uncommon in the Ghataprabha River, the appearance of such a large one for the first time has alarmed residents, adding to their concerns as summer progresses.
