A tragic incident unfolded in Belagavi on Monday evening when a 29-year-old man killed an 18-year-old girl after she rejected his marriage proposal, before taking his own life.
The accused, Prashant Kundekar, a painter from Yellur near Belagavi, had been in a relationship with Aishwarya Mahesh Lohar for over a year. However, Lohar’s mother insisted that Kundekar achieve financial stability before considering marriage, a condition that the girl also seemed to agree with.
According to Belagavi Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang, Kundekar was desperate to marry Lohar and had been trying to persuade her despite her family’s objections. The two met at Lohar’s aunt’s house on Monday, where an argument escalated over the issue.
Police reports suggest that Lohar was hesitant to marry immediately, echoing her mother’s concerns about Kundekar’s financial situation. In a fit of rage, Kundekar allegedly attempted to force her to consume poison. When she resisted, he fatally stabbed her in the neck before turning the knife on himself, dying on the spot.
