BJP members in the Belagavi City Corporation have warned of protests against the state government if the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections are not conducted without further delay.
Led by MLA Abhay Patil, a delegation met Regional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sanjay Shettannanavar on Thursday. They submitted a memorandum demanding early elections for the mayoral posts. The Mayor’s term officially ended on February 14.
The members have set a deadline, warning of protests outside the Regional Commissioner’s office if election dates are not announced by Monday.
Accusing the Congress government of deliberately stalling the Mayoral elections in Belagavi and Gadag, they alleged the ruling party is resorting to unfair tactics. They also criticized the state for disqualifying two members of the Belagavi City Corporation through legal misuse, a move they have formally challenged.
“Our members have raised objections to the disqualification,” Patil asserted.
