In a distressing incident in Kanabargi village, Belagavi taluk, a two-month-old girl was thrown into a lake by her mother, who believed the child was suffering from epilepsy (fits).
Locals, who were at the lake washing cattle, witnessed the act and immediately rushed to rescue the baby. The mother, identified as Shanta (35), wife of Robert Karavinakoppi, attempted to flee but was stopped by the locals, who counseled her and ensured the child was safe.
The infant was later admitted to a private children’s hospital in Belagavi for treatment. Police from the Malmaruti station arrived at the scene and launched an investigation. An ambulance was called by the locals to shift the baby for medical care. The Police Commissioner confirmed that Shanta has been arrested, and further inquiries are ongoing.
