Cantonment board finalizes renaming of 12 roads and parks

In a notable effort to honor historical and cultural icons, the Cantonment Board finalized the renaming of 12 roads within its jurisdiction during a meeting held on Thursday, December 12, at the Board Hall. The meeting was chaired by Brigadier Joydeep Mukherjee and attended by CEO Rajeev, board member Sudhir Tupekar, and other officials.

High Street has been renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road, among other significant changes. Following public objections and suggestions, three road names were revised:

• North Telegraph Road is now Belawadi Mallamma Road.
• Smart Road has been renamed Martyr Wing Commander Hanmantrao Sarathy Road.
• Picket Road is now Lance Nayak Hanumanthappa Road.

Additionally, three parks were renamed to honor notable personalities:

• Queen’s Garden is now Bhagini Nivedita Garden.
• Post Garden has been renamed Gangubai Hangal Garden.
• Excise Garden is now Bhimsen Joshi Garden.
  

Public input was invited on the 34 roads under Cantonment limits, resulting in 72 responses. Sixty favored the renaming, while objections led to revisions for three roads.

Proposals to recognize war heroes, freedom fighters, saints, poets, cricketers, and other prominent figures from Karnataka were submitted. While one suggestion advocated retaining the name of Nolan Marg, another proposed designating the junction of Khanapur Road and Havelock Road as Ambedkar Circle, complete with a statue. This proposal was formally backed by Nominated Member Sudhir K. Tupekar in his December 5 submission to the board.
