High Street in Belagavi’s Camp area is set to be renamed after Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Belagavi Cantonment Board (BCB), established in 1832 by the British, has renamed 34 streets in the area. Currently, many streets are named after British officers, but these will now honor national heroes, martyrs, and Param Vir Chakra recipients.
The BCB sought suggestions and objections from the public, with the deadline closing on Monday. Regarding High Street, only one group opposed the renaming, while 55 organizations, including various Ganeshotsav Mandals and social groups, supported naming it after Shivaji Maharaj.
BCB member Sudhir Tupekar had earlier proposed naming streets after national icons, and a committee was formed to finalize the names. Based on public input and the committee’s recommendations, the decision was finalized on July 15.
