A determined 12-year-old girl from Hirebagewadi, Belagavi district, has found support from Women and Child Development Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar to continue her education amid challenges at home. The sixth-standard student, facing harassment from her alcoholic father, remained at home even after her mother left to stay with her parents. Unable to endure the situation, she decided to seek help from Minister Hebbalkar.
On Friday, accompanied by her grandmother, the girl visited the minister’s residence. While Hebbalkar was attending constituency programs, her son Mrinal initially heard the girl’s story. Upon her return, the minister listened to the girl’s account and was deeply moved by her determination to pursue education. Acting swiftly, Hebbalkar contacted Nagraj, Deputy Director of the Women and Child Development Department, instructing him to arrange for the girl’s accommodation at the Savadatti Residential Hostel for Girls. The minister also provided financial assistance for necessities like clothing.
“She is like my own daughter. Ensure her safety, education, and a secure future,” Hebbalkar directed the officials. Addressing the girl, she said, “Study hard and create a bright future for yourself.” Within hours, arrangements were made for the girl’s transfer to the hostel, with Nagraj and the child protection team ensuring all necessary facilities were in place.
