The Belagavi Cantonment Board (BCB), founded in 1832 by the British, has decided to rename 34 of its streets. Currently, many streets bear the names of British officers, which will now be replaced with those of national heroes, martyrs, and Param Vir Chakra recipients. Public suggestions and objections have been invited within 30 days from October 22. Among the renamed streets, one will honor Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This decision aligns with the ongoing transfer of the BCB’s civil areas to the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC).
The renaming proposal, introduced by nominated board member Sudhir Tupekar, was approved on July 15, pending public feedback. A committee formed for this purpose finalized the new names. BCB CEO Rajeev Kumar confirmed that all suggestions received by the deadline will be reviewed. According to the public notice, High Street will become Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Marg, while Smart Road will be renamed Vikram Batra Road.
Further changes include: St Anthony Street becoming Devansingh Road, Cattle Road changing to Nazir Ahmed Wani Road, and Nolan Marg to be called Yogesh Yadav Road. Dhobi Ghat Road will remain the name for Approach Road Dhobi Ghat, and Approach Road Asadkhan Darga will now be Darga Road. Additionally, Mochi Road will be renamed Baba Jagjivan Ram Marg, and Havelock Road will become Vaida Marg.
Other changes include TRG Area Road to CDO TRG Area Road, Point Road to Sundaraji Road, Provost Road to JJ Singh Road, and Queens Garden Road to Mohim Sharma Road. Nainakot Road will be renamed Parvesvaran Road, Main Guard Road to Mahedi Street, Temple Galli to Abdul Hamid Road, and North Telegraph Road to Hosiar Singh Road. Crookshank Road becomes Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road, while Lodge Road will now be Firusingh Road.
Convent Road will be renamed Manoj Pande Road, Rajendra Singh Road to Tarapur Road, and Pulak Road will change to Trichi Road. Davidson Road becomes Jasretia Road, Lyton Road is renamed SF Rodrigues Road, and Indian Military Hospital Road will now be Old MH Road. Wilsley Road will become Somanath Sharma Road, Canning Road will be Jadunath Singh Road, and Rampart Road will be renamed Furu Singh Road. Feror Road changes to GAS Salaria Road, Mayo Road becomes Dhansingh Thapa Road, Kennedy Road will now be AB Tarpane Road, and Slaughter House Camp Road will become Fateh Singh Road. Finally, Circular Road is renamed Bana Singh Road, and D’Silva Lane will be known as Sanjay Kumar Road.
