In response to an uptick in inter-state thefts in and around the Belagavi region, Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang has announced several stringent measures to enhance policing in areas with reported theft incidents.
Recently, a thief was caught and tied to a tree by a group of locals in Hindalga, highlighting community concerns over rising crime rates, particularly in Belagavi’s rural areas.
Commissioner Marbaniang reported that police have successfully arrested all suspects involved in house thefts in the Modaga Honnihal, Hudali, and Khangaon areas, which fall under the jurisdiction of Marihal Police Station. Authorities recovered ₹7.80 lakh in stolen cash and two motorcycles from these individuals.
To bolster safety, the commissioner emphasized the need for increased police patrols throughout the city to keep a close watch on suspicious activities.
When questioned about the lack of CCTV coverage in all areas to deter thefts and burglaries, the commissioner explained that approximately 280 CCTV cameras have been installed within the city limits, with the Smart City Project officials responsible for their upkeep.
Addressing concerns raised by traders about alleged harassment of Goan vehicles entering Belagavi, Commissioner Marbaniang acknowledged receiving complaints on the matter and assured that he would investigate further.
