The Karnataka Congress is organizing a significant event in December to mark the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency at the Indian National Congress session held in Belagavi in 1924. This session is historically important as it was the only one presided over by Gandhi during his lifetime.
During a recent celebration for Gandhi Jayanti, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil announced plans to invite former U.S. President Barack Obama to headline the event. A committee, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and supported by Congress State President D.K. Shivakumar, is actively working to secure Obama’s attendance in Belagavi on December 24, 25, or 26 to deliver a keynote address.
In his speech for Gandhi Jayanti, Patil highlighted Obama’s recognition of Gandhi as a global icon, emphasizing the significance of inviting him to help raise awareness and combat efforts that undermine Gandhi’s legacy.
Previously, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated in his Independence Day address on August 15 that the Karnataka government is committed to ensuring that the centenary celebration of the Belagavi session is both memorable and meaningful, focusing on honoring Gandhi’s enduring impact.
The relationship between Gandhi and the Belagavi district is particularly noteworthy, as it is the only location in Karnataka where a Congress session was chaired by Gandhi. This association began in 1920, following the death of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, with Gandhi visiting Nippani and Belagavi on November 8, 1920, for public meetings. The Congress session held from December 26 to 28, 1924, played a crucial role in galvanizing nationalist activities in the region. Gandhi also visited the area during the all-India “Harijan Seva Tour” in 1934.
