The Hon’ble High Court has instructed the Belgaum City Corporation to provide significant compensation to landowners impacted by two road projects in the city. The court has ordered the Corporation to pay a total of ₹20 crores to landowners whose properties were acquired for the road construction from Bank of India Circle to Old PB Road, part of the Belgaum Smart City initiative.
Additionally, the Corporation must compensate other landowners affected by the widening of Mahatma Phule Road, which connects to the aforementioned project, with a payment of ₹70 lakhs.
Further complicating the Corporation’s financial challenges, a delayed GST payment of ₹5 crores has increased to ₹8 crores due to penalties. In light of these financial pressures, the Belgaum Municipal Corporation has scheduled an emergency meeting on August 27, 2024, at 11:30 AM to address the urgent matters of compensation and GST payments.
