Belgaum to Build Its First-Ever Flyover to Ease Traffic Congestion

Belgaum is on the brink of a significant transformation with the planned construction of its first-ever flyover. Stretching 4.50 kilometers, this ambitious infrastructure project will connect National Highway-48 (NH-48) to Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle, extending further along NH via Dr. Ambedkar Road and KLE Hospital. The flyover is expected to greatly enhance traffic flow in the city, which has been grappling with increasing congestion.

The project, estimated to cost ₹4500 crores, is spearheaded by District In-charge Minister Satish Jarakiholi and has received approval from Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, marking a significant milestone for the region.

As Belgaum’s population and vehicle density continue to rise, the flyover is a strategic solution to the city’s growing traffic challenges. It is designed to facilitate smoother vehicular movement, reducing traffic bottlenecks and easing congestion at key intersections.

The flyover will start near Sankam Hotel on NH-48, pass through important junctions such as Ashoka Circle and Sangolli Rayanna Circle (R.T.O.), and extend up to Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle. From there, it will continue along Dr. Ambedkar Road, reconnecting with the NH near ICMR. This carefully planned route aims to alleviate traffic at some of Belgaum’s most congested points.

In addition to easing traffic, the flyover will integrate with other major infrastructure projects. It will provide easy access to the upcoming super specialty hospital and the new district collector’s office complex, ensuring these facilities are well-connected.

Key Features of the Flyover:

Rotaries at Major Junctions: Rotaries will be constructed at Ashoka Circle and Kittur Chennamma Circle to facilitate smooth traffic movement and significantly reduce congestion.

Three Traffic Ramps: The flyover will feature three ramps to streamline traffic flow. One ramp will lead to the bus stand, another will connect to the RTO on the roundabout side, and the third will join the Mahantesh Nagar side road at Ashoka Circle. Similarly, at Sangolli Rayanna Circle (R.T.O.), three ramps will connect Chennamma Circle, Krishna Devaraya Circle (Kolhapur Circle), and the bus station.

Service Road to Sambra Airport: A service road via a proposed Road Over Bridge (ROB) will provide direct access to Sambra Airport, enhancing connectivity for residents and visitors.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the flyover will be prepared soon, offering more precise details. The current information is based on the Action Plan report.
