A 42-year-old woman faced severe assault and public humiliation due to a land dispute in Karnataka’s Belgaum district, as reported by the police on Thursday. Additionally, the woman’s husband and son were also subjected to attacks.
The recent incident has been verified by Athani police inspector Ravindra Naikwadi, who stated, “We were informed about the attack on a woman, her husband, and their son related to a disagreement concerning agricultural land.”
The occurrence transpired in Ainapur village of Kagwad taluk on Wednesday evening when individuals from a family allegedly pulled the woman from her farm hut, disrobed her, and subjected her to physical assault, as per the police. As per authorities, three women “violently took off the woman’s sari and beat her brutally.”
As per the police, Suresh Dannolli and Subhash Dannolli, accompanied by a minimum of three women from their family, purportedly assaulted the victim’s husband and son, resulting in severe injuries to the latter.
“The Dannolli brothers assaulted us using sticks and fists, and their female relatives also physically attacked us,” mentioned one of the family members who underwent the assault.
The family, belonging to a backward community, received a 3-acre plot on the outskirts of Ainapur from the Karnataka government in 1991. However, as per sources, the Dannolli brothers allegedly encroached upon a portion of their land five years ago, using threats and physical violence whenever the family requested its restitution. Moreover, the accused are also charged with encroaching upon a government road next to the victim’s property.
Inspector Naikwadi mentioned, “The accused will face suitable consequences.” He affirmed that currently, there is no formal complaint lodged. He stated, “None of the family members has approached the police, but immediate action will be taken upon the filing of an official complaint.”
This incident is not the initial occurrence of its kind in the district. Previously, a woman was forcefully removed from her residence, publicly displayed unclothed, fastened to an electric pole, and physically assaulted, purportedly in response to her son running away with another woman from the village.
