Deputy Commissioner of Belagavi Nitesh Patil recently informed that the expansion of Sambra Airport’s runway and terminal in Belagavi is under process. The district administration will obtain 57 acres of land in Belagavi for the same. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has issued Rs. 229.57 Cr to the Belagavi airport for the Belagavi New Terminal building construction and related works.
The Belagavi Terminal Building will be spread in an area of 20000 square meters. The New Terminal building will cover an area of approximately 16,400 square meters, and the rest 3600 square meters will be used for converting the existing terminal into arrivals.
The Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil stressed on the significance of giving in a detailed report that includes every information about the need of land for the terminal expansion and runway and also for its proper usage, in a meeting held at the Collectorate hall on 18 November. He also told the director of the airport to submit clear and written information concerning the alternative road provision and other facilities for the nearby people.
The allocation of land for the airport has already been granted. The additional land acquired will only be used for the terminal and runway expansion and installation of signal lights. DC Nitesh Patil gave assurance about the land required for the terminal expansion project.
For the development of Belagavi airport, it is highly significant to address the issue of 14.05 acres of land currently in the hands of the Air Force. Patil said that the mutual discussion needs to happen to solve the issue.
Belagavi airport director, Thiagarajan, seeked for land and other necessary facilities for the expansion and development of the runway and terminal. He also put emphasis on building alternate roads and other infrastructures which would favor the local communities.
The construction work for the terminal is planned to begin in 2024, after the submission and approval of the structural plan. The project is likely to take 36 months for completion.
