The Kannada Rajyotsava celebration in Belgaum, Karnataka, was nothing short of a spectacular extravaganza this year. With lakhs of enthusiastic participants, predominantly youth from across the district, this annual event broke all past records in terms of footfalls and fervor.
The district administration had anticipated a turnout of 3 to 5 lakh people for the event, but the actual attendance exceeded these predictions. The heart of the celebration was at Channamma Circle, where the festivities took a grand scale. More than 75 beautifully crafted tableaux on various themes were showcased in a lively procession that painted the city with cultural pride.
Belgaum city was adorned with the vibrant colors of red and yellow flags as the celebrations unfolded. The enthusiasm and love for the Kannada culture were on full display as the youth danced to the tunes of evergreen Kannada songs, showing their deep connection to their mother tongue.
The celebrations were inaugurated at the district stadium by District Minister Satish Jarkiholi, who set the tone for the day. The Mayor of Belgaum, Shobha Somanache, and Deputy Mayor Rashma Patil, paid their respects to the statue of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari. The event was graced by the presence of Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi and MLA Asif Sait, who added to the significance of the occasion.
The celebration wasn’t just about the grandeur; it was also about acknowledging and honoring the contributions of individuals in various fields. On this day, 25 eminent personalities were felicitated for their outstanding services in fields including social service, journalism, and arts.
The journalism community received special recognition as nine journalists, including Noushad Bijapur, Keerthanakumari Kasaragod, Chandrakant Sugandhi, Shridhar Kotargasti, and cameraman PK Badiger, were felicitated for their dedication and contributions to the industry.
Minister Satish Jarkiholi took the opportunity to congratulate Nijagunananda Swamiji of Nishkal Mantap and Shehnai expert S Balesh Bhajantri for winning the state-level Kannada Rajyotsava awards. Speaking to reporters, the minister revealed plans for the construction of a new building complex for district-level offices, with the government having allocated Rs 100 crore for the project’s first installment.
Furthermore, Minister Jarkiholi shared that the central government has given approval for the construction of a flyover in Belgaum to alleviate traffic congestion, and discussions with the center are ongoing to initiate the project. He also discussed plans to divide Belgaum taluk due to its substantial population, which necessitates such a move. Additionally, there were talks about incorporating 12-13 surrounding villages into the Belgaum City Corporation.
