Iranna Kadadi, a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, recently convened a meeting with Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, in New Delhi. During this meeting, Kadadi passionately advocated for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Doppler Weather Radar Center in the Belagavi region.
To Kadadi’s satisfaction, Minister Rijiju responded affirmatively, recognizing the importance of Doppler radars in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance. The Minister emphasized that India is already manufacturing these advanced radars domestically, aligning with the nation’s commitment to reduce reliance on foreign imports. However, he openly acknowledged a slight delay in the process due to the non-availability of certain components.
Nonetheless, Minister Rijiju assured Kadadi that prioritizing the establishment of the Doppler Weather Radar Center in Belagavi is of utmost importance. He pledged to personally oversee and monitor the progress of this critical initiative, ensuring its swift implementation.
Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) are sophisticated instruments used to enhance the accuracy of long-range weather forecasting and surveillance. These radars utilize the Doppler effect, which detects changes in frequency as precipitation moves toward or away from the radar. This technology is crucial in predicting tornadoes and wind gusts.
Each station within the DWR network comprises a radar transmitter that emits a microwave signal and a radar receiver that detects the reflected signal. While these components are typically situated near each other, they can also be spaced at a considerable distance. As the radar signal encounters moving objects, it bounces off them, and the Doppler effect comes into play, enabling the determination of the speed and direction of these objects.
To offer a comprehensive view of the monitored area, the radar stations within the Doppler network are interconnected with a central processing system. This system consolidates data from all stations, resulting in a holistic understanding of weather conditions. Additionally, it can be integrated with other weather monitoring equipment, such as weather balloons and satellites, to provide a more comprehensive and precise depiction of regional weather.
