The Karnataka government has tentatively scheduled a 10-day winter session for both Houses of the state legislature at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi, with proceedings set to begin on December 7, 2026. In a letter dated October 27, Chief Secretary Dr Shalini Rajneesh informed the Secretary in-charge of the Karnataka Legislative Council and Assembly Secretariat that these dates were discussed during the Cabinet meeting held on October 15. The Secretariat has been instructed to commence the necessary preparations for the event.
The correspondence notes that the dates are currently “tentatively” fixed, meaning the schedule remains subject to formal notification by the Governor, which is the standard procedure for summoning a legislative session. Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Saleem Ahmed stated, “We have tentatively decided to hold the session in Belagavi from December 7. It has not been officially announced yet. We will make all necessary preparations to hold the session effectively and also to discuss issues relevant to North Karnataka.”
The opposition parties, the BJP and JDS, who largely boycotted the previous session, are expected to pressure the ruling party on regional concerns, including farmer distress, irrigation, flood relief, and a lack of development projects. Conversely, the ruling party aims to demonstrate that the Belagavi session will be substantive rather than merely ceremonial, focusing on debates and legislation addressing the specific needs of the region.
