Priyanka Jarkiholi, daughter of Congress nominee and Minister Satish Jarkiholi, emerged victorious in the Chikkodi constituency, defeating the BJP’s incumbent MP Annasaheb Jolle. Priyanka Jarkiholi, representing Chikkodi, has made history as the youngest tribal woman from Karnataka to secure a seat in Parliament from an unreserved constituency since independence. Notably, the BJP claimed victory in all Mumbai Karnataka seats except for Chikkodi.
Priyanka Jarkiholi achieved several notable milestones. She is the first woman from the tribal community in Karnataka to win an unreserved seat and the second leader from a reserved community to secure victory in a general seat, following in the footsteps of Kotturu Hariharappa Ranganath, who served as a Lok Sabha member from Chitradurga from 1984-1989. At just 27 years, 1 month, and 18 days old on June 4, Priyanka will also be one of the youngest members of Parliament, surpassing the minimum age requirement of 25 years for contesting parliamentary elections.
Similarly, Sagar Khandre, another successful Congress nominee from Bidar, is even younger, at 26 years, 5 months, and 24 days old.
In the past, the Chikkodi constituency has witnessed unexpected outcomes. Ratnamala Pol Savanur, a law college professor, caused a stir by defeating MP and Union Minister B. Shankaranand seven times in 1996. Despite being nominated by the Janata Party, she was not put forward as a candidate in 1998. Subsequently, Ramesh Jigajinagi secured victory in the following three elections, representing three different parties: Janata Dal, Lok Shakti, and BJP.
In an interview with The Hindu in April, Priyanka Jarkiholi emphasized the importance of increased female representation in public life, particularly in politics. She stressed the need for women to actively participate to ensure effective governance, including the enactment of laws and implementation of policies. Priyanka also addressed concerns about the impact of women’s reservations in rural and urban local bodies, as well as the perception that women from political families may prioritize the opinions of male relatives over making independent decisions. She underscored the responsibility of women who have been given the chance to serve the public to address such questions through their actions and contributions.
Priyanka Jarkiholi acknowledged her upbringing in a family with considerable influence and unique advantages. Being the only female member of the second generation in the influential Jarkiholi family, renowned for its dominance in district politics since the late 90s, she is fully aware of her background. As an MBA graduate, Priyanka also holds substantial stakes in 14 companies operating across various sectors, including tourism, sugar, mining, and infrastructure.
Priyanka Jarkiholi embraces her diverse identities as a young individual, the daughter of a Minister, and a tribal woman who has had the privilege of receiving a post-graduate education. She acknowledges these facets of her life but emphasizes that true leadership and capability are demonstrated through actions and achievements. On June 4, she expressed her gratitude to the people of the Lok Sabha constituency, attributing her victory to the collective efforts of party workers, leaders, and the support of all voters. She noted the dedicated work of party leaders and MLAs, who campaigned tirelessly as if it were their own election, and credited the welfare schemes of the Congress party and the positive image of her father for contributing to her success.
