In a notable civic initiative, members of the Citizens Council of Belagavi met Regional Commissioner Ms. Janaki KM (IAS) on February 24, 2026, urging immediate measures to avoid delays in executing the ₹135 crore CITIIS 2.0 project sanctioned for the city.
The delegation, headed by Council President Satish Tendulkar, raised concerns about procedural complications and administrative slowdowns that could affect the timely rollout of the prestigious Central Government scheme.
About the CITIIS 2.0 Project
Belagavi has been selected under CITIIS 2.0 (City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain), a flagship urban initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The project, with an approved outlay of around ₹135 crore, aims to improve solid waste management systems and develop climate-resilient, sustainable urban infrastructure. For Belagavi, an expanding commercial and educational centre in North Karnataka, the initiative is viewed as a key step toward modernising civic services and addressing environmental concerns.
Apprehensions Over Delays
In their memorandum, Council members pointed to pending financial contributions, delays in tender processes, and other administrative hurdles. They warned that continued delays could put the sanctioned funds at risk.
The delegation noted that failure to meet compliance requirements and implementation deadlines might lead to the withdrawal or reallocation of funds to another city.
“Losing this project would seriously hamper Belagavi’s development and public welfare,” the Council stated, underlining the pressing need for efficient waste management and sustainable infrastructure to support the city’s growing population and economy.
Assurance from Regional Commissioner
Responding to the representation, Ms. Janaki KM assured the delegation that she would urgently address the issue with the concerned authorities. She indicated that appropriate steps would be taken to ensure the project remains with Belagavi and progresses without further delay.
The Council also requested a review of the current status, expedited fund release, completion of pending tender procedures, and measures to secure the project allocation for the city.
Members Present
The meeting was attended by Satish Tendulkar, Basavraj Javali, Kamalesh Khoda, Nitesh Jain, Vikas Kalghatgi, Mukesh Khoda, along with other members of the Citizens Council.
Significance for the City
As a major commercial and educational hub in North Karnataka, Belagavi is facing increasing strain on its civic infrastructure. Strengthening solid waste management and adopting climate-resilient urban planning are crucial for environmental protection, public health, and sustainable growth.
Successful execution of the CITIIS 2.0 project could substantially improve the city’s environmental framework and reinforce its standing as a forward-looking urban centre. Residents are now awaiting decisive administrative action to ensure the project translates into tangible development on the ground.
