Belagavi City Corporation is preparing to construct a permanent stray dog sterilisation centre in Savgaon, located on the city’s outskirts. Officials have identified a one-acre plot in Belagavi taluk for the facility, and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan has transferred the revenue land to the corporation following the approval of a previously submitted proposal. The site, which health officials deem suitable, is situated away from residential areas with cemeteries on two sides and private land on the third.
Currently, sterilisation surgeries are being performed at a temporary shed in Hirebagewadi, a location that has drawn opposition from some local residents. This temporary arrangement was necessitated after the closure of a previous centre in Srinagar, which was shut down following opposition from corporator Lakshmi Rathod. Operations at the Hirebagewadi facility will continue until the new Savgaon centre is fully established. Additionally, the city corporation has designated 26 feeding zones for stray dogs across Belagavi.
