MLA and Bemul Chairman Balachandra Jarkiholi announced that the Belgaum District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union (Bemul) has achieved a historic milestone by collecting 3 lakh kilograms of milk daily for the first time in its history. This significant feat marks a new benchmark for the cooperative union in the region.
Jarkiholi detailed the breakdown of the daily collection, noting that it comprises 65,000 kg of buffalo milk and 2.35 lakh kg of cow milk sourced from producer societies across various talukas in the district. He attributed this success to the growth of the district’s dairy sector, the hard work of milk producers, their cooperative spirit, and the efficient administration of the union.
To incentivize producers, Bemul offers several benefits, including the distribution of rubber mats, fodder cutting machines, and milk churners at a 60% discount to member producers. Cooperative societies owning their own land are provided with a grant of ₹5 lakh for the construction of new buildings. Additionally, the union provides insurance at discounted rates for dairy animals and offers compensation of ₹60,000 to the heirs of deceased members under the Raita Kalyana Sangha scheme. The union has also initiated measures to make dairy farming a profitable enterprise for farmers by providing training, emergency veterinary treatment, and quality services.
Jarkiholi urged all farmers and milk producers in the district to supply their milk to Bemul rather than private dairies, as the latter deprives them of the various benefits available through the cooperative union. He emphasized the importance of supplying quality milk to Bemul to avail these advantages.
Raybag taluka leads the daily collection with 61,800 kg, followed by Moodalagi with 32,400 kg, Athani with 31,400 kg, and Gokak with 30,000 kg. Other talukas contribute as follows: Khanapur 26,300 kg, Ramdurg 20,900 kg, Belgaum 14,600 kg, Channamane Kitti 14,200 kg, Bailhongal 12,700 kg, Hukkeri 12,500 kg, Chickodi 9,000 kg, Kagal 5,000 kg, and Nippani 2,000 kg. The societies in Savadatti and Yargatti talukas collectively collect 27,200 kg daily.
