Saroja Kirabi, a 52-year-old farm worker, was found dead on Thursday in Shiroor village, Hukkeri taluk, Belagavi district.
Saroja was reportedly distressed after being cheated by Holeppa Daddi, an agent who handled government-related work. She had taken a loan from a microfinance company and transferred the amount to Holeppa, trusting him to secure a government subsidy for her.
Although Holeppa had assured her that he would repay the loan, he failed to fulfill his promise. The finance company continued to demand repayments from Saroja, leaving her under immense pressure, according to the police.
Her son lodged a complaint, alleging that Holeppa cheated her by not paying some of the loan installments. A case has been registered at the Kakati Police Station.
