On March 1, morning walkers in west Belgaum were thrilled to witness a wild elephant leisurely strolling and pausing to graze along the roadside. Quick to respond, someone alerted forest officials, prompting local police and forestry authorities to halt traffic to ensure the elephant’s safe passage. Commuters observed the majestic creature from a distance, captivated by its unhurried movement.
The lone elephant was first seen at the intersection of Bauxite Road and Hindalga Road, navigating through narrow lanes and the backyards of houses. Forest officials speculated that the tusker might be journeying from Kakati forest to the Kowad jungles, traversing villages such as Alataga and Uchagaon along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border.
Concerns arose among farmers, fearing the elephant might venture into sugarcane fields along the Kolhapur road. However, the elephant’s route took a diagonal path, heading towards Uchagaon, allaying worries in the community.
