Belagavi, one of the state’s rapidly expanding cities, is grappling with severe traffic congestion. Despite implementing a one-way traffic system on 10 major roads under the North and South Traffic Police jurisdictions, non-compliance with traffic regulations remains a pressing issue. On average, 105 fatalities occur annually due to accidents caused by traffic violations.
With the daily surge in vehicles, smooth traffic movement has become challenging. To mitigate congestion, the police have enforced one-way systems at locations including Pimpalkatta in Raviwar Peth, Nehru Nagar Second and Third Cross, Ganapati Galli, Kirloskar Road, Ramadev Galli, Tilakwadi D Mart Marg, and Anasurkar Galli. However, most areas lack traffic signals and on-ground police personnel, leading to frequent violations.
According to traffic authorities, over the past three years, 315 people lost their lives due to violations such as overspeeding, helmetless riding, and disregarding one-way rules.
Prakash, a Nehru Nagar resident, highlighted that narrow roads and encroachments by street vendors further worsen traffic congestion. Although certain areas were designated as one-way zones, lax enforcement has rendered these measures ineffective.
Santosh, from Pangul Galli, echoed similar concerns, stating that mismanagement has exacerbated the traffic situation.
Police reports indicate that 900 traffic violation cases were registered in 2023, with fines amounting to ₹3.9 lakh. The figures rose sharply in 2024, with 2,500 cases and fines totaling ₹10.9 lakh. In the first two months of this year alone, 300 one-way violations were recorded, resulting in ₹1.1 lakh in fines.
DCP of Crime and Traffic, Niranjan Raje Urs, emphasized the need for strict enforcement and increased awareness. “Educating the public on traffic rules is crucial. We are planning an awareness campaign to caution vehicle owners,” he stated.
