The survey of urban settlements within Belgaum cantonment has been paused because the necessary maps are not available. These settlements are slated for transfer to Belgaum City Corporation, which requested the maps from Cantonment Board Belgaum. However, direct access to the maps was not possible, and the Cantonment Board advised filing a formal application to obtain them. The survey will resume once the maps are obtained.
Despite city staff having other responsibilities such as surveying out-of-school children and collecting municipal revenue, they were engaged in the cantonment survey, which lasted only one day. The Municipal Corporation stated that the survey will recommence upon securing the required maps.
A formal request has been made by the Municipal Corporation to the Cantonment Board for the maps. The transfer of these urban settlements between the Cantonment Board and the Municipal Corporation, with Collector Mohammad Roshan actively participating, is ongoing. However, frustration among municipal officials and staff has arisen due to regulations preventing direct access to the maps.
A meeting was convened in the presence of DC Belgaum and other officials to resolve disagreements over which settlements should be transferred. It was decided to conduct a joint survey with Defense Department officials. DC Mohamad Roshan instructed the gathering of all necessary documents before resuming the survey. The team covered 60 acres of land from RTO Circle to the Fort Vegetable Market starting July 26, but the lack of maps halted progress.
Residents of the urban settlements within the cantonment advocate for transferring all settlements, while the Board proposes transferring only a few colonies, resulting in a lack of consensus and further delays in the survey process.
