Dharwad Police have arrested six individuals, including three students, on charges of posting morphed photographs of female students with obscene comments on social media. The arrests followed a complaint by a student named Kumar, whose edited photo alongside six female students was shared on Instagram with the intent to defame them.
In his complaint filed on Monday, Kumar stated that when the targeted students asked the accused to remove the photos, they demanded ₹15,000 in return. The accused also allegedly threatened to post more obscene images if their demands were not met.
Acting on the complaint, Dharwad Urban Police registered a case under Section 67 of the IT Act and Sections 308(2), 351(2), 78-3(5) of BNS. The police arrested the accused within 24 hours of initiating the investigation.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sachin Kadakbhavi from Gokak, Akash Meti from Muddebihal, and Prakash Navalur from Kelageri in Dharwad, all of whom are college students. Additionally, Mounesh Badiger from Ramadurg, Anand Sendage from Raibag, and Sunil Parvatikar from Gokak, who are in Dharwad preparing for competitive exams, were also arrested.
The police are currently searching for two more suspects involved in the case.
