Belagavi City Corporation has started the process of identifying six designated “feeding zones” for stray dogs across the city, in line with a Supreme Court directive. The state government has instructed all urban local bodies to establish such zones to regulate the rising stray dog population.
Under the plan, two feeding zones will be created in each of the city’s three municipal divisions. Municipal Commissioner Shubha B. held a meeting on Thursday, directing the Health Department to immediately locate suitable sites.
Challenges remain over site availability and possible resistance from the public. To resolve this, the corporation may seek support from elected representatives and ward corporators in finalizing the spots.
The shortlisted locations will be reviewed by Commissioner Shubha B. before approval, and the issue could also come up in the Corporation’s discussions.
The Supreme Court has banned the feeding of stray dogs in open public areas, requiring civic bodies to set up designated points to minimize inconvenience. While a sterilization drive is underway, with around 6,000 dogs sterilized to date, the feeding zones are expected to support the program and enhance public safety.
