Belagavi’s iconic Fort Lake (Kote Kere) is set for a major transformation with ₹9.20 crore sanctioned for its improvement. Of this, ₹8 crore will go towards developmental projects, while ₹1.20 crore is allocated for maintenance. The funding, approved under the Central Government’s Amrit Yojana, is spearheaded by State Chief Secretary Dr. Shalini Rajneesh.
The Belagavi City Corporation has prepared development plans, ensuring swift commencement once the funds are disbursed. Formerly under the Minor Irrigation Department, Killa Lake was handed over to the Municipal Corporation in 2020, paving the way for comprehensive urban development.
Dr. Rajneesh, known for her deep ties to Belagavi from her previous roles as Deputy Commissioner and Municipal Administrator, recently visited Fort Lake during the legislative session to outline her vision for the area. Key initiatives include an “Urban Forest,” landscaping, and an open-air theatre, alongside high-mast lighting and other essential facilities to enhance its appeal as a cultural and recreational hub.
Her commitment to Fort Lake’s development traces back to her administrative tenure in the city. Even now, as the Chief Secretary, she prioritizes its transformation.
Over the years, Fort Lake has seen additions like a walking track, boating facilities, and a laser tech park under the Smart City scheme. However, inconsistent public access has limited their utilization. The new ₹9.20 crore funding aims to revitalize these amenities, ensuring their full use.
Home to one of the country’s tallest flagpoles with the national flag fluttering for eight months annually, Fort Lake is set to emerge as Belagavi’s leading tourist destination, blending natural beauty, recreation, and cultural significance.
