A man accused of pelting stones at the Ashwathama Temple in Pangul Galli, Belagavi, was caught by locals and later handed over to the police on Wednesday night.
The incident, which occurred in the bustling market area amid Ramadan shopping, briefly heightened communal tensions. Upon noticing the act, locals apprehended the individual, tied him to a pole, and informed the authorities.
Identified as Yasir, a resident of Ujwal Nagar, the accused reportedly struck the temple gate with a stone. Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang confirmed that officers secured the 19-year-old and legal action has been initiated.
Investigations revealed that the youth, who has been undergoing psychiatric treatment, claimed he acted in retaliation for a Holi incident where someone allegedly wore attire resembling a burqa. The Market police continue to probe the case.
