On Sunday, in celebration of the International Day of Democracy, a large human chain was formed across various districts, with participants holding hands and reading the Preamble of the Constitution.
In Belagavi, the chain was inaugurated by leaders and officials who paid floral tributes to an image of the Preamble at Suvarna Soudha. Folk artists performed along the route. Minister Satish Jarkiholi described the event as a means to foster kinship and understanding of democracy, emphasizing its role in expressing diverse voices and protecting fundamental rights. He highlighted the importance of upholding the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution.
The human chain in Belagavi stretched 145 kilometers, from Salahalli in Ramadurga to Tegur village in Kittur taluk. Minister Lakshmi Hebbalakar praised the initiative as a remarkable effort that might set an international record.
In Vijayapura, the chain extended about 62 kilometers from the Raichur border to the Bagalkot border. Participants, including students, self-help groups, and local officials, planted saplings along the route and read the Preamble. Deputy Commissioner T. Bhoobalan highlighted the unity and equality guaranteed by the Constitution and noted that over 25 lakh people participated across Bidar to Chamarajanagar.
In Dharwad, more than 95,000 people joined the human chain, exceeding expectations for the 53-kilometer stretch. The inaugural procession featured children dressed as notable leaders and folk artists. Minister Santosh Lad spoke on the Constitution’s core values and the significance of national integration. Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J. emphasized the day’s role in reinforcing free speech, civil liberties, and the rule of law.
Other notable attendees included MLAs, police commissioners, and various district officials.
