The National Medical Commission (NMC) has denied the renewal of undergraduate and postgraduate seats for a private medical college in Belagavi for the academic year 2025– 26, following allegations of bribery involving an NMC assessor. The CBI arrested a senior doctor serving as an assessor after he was allegedly caught accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe in exchange for a favorable inspection report, as per a press release.
“As a punitive measure, the renewal of existing UG and PG seats will not be granted for 2025–26. Additionally, applications for seat increase and new course introductions for both UG and PG submitted to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board for 2025–26 stand cancelled,” the statement added.
The NMC has also blacklisted the assessor, pending further investigation. The college, with an intake of 200 undergraduate students, is part of a deemed-to-be university and does not share seats with the state government.
Meanwhile, the college principal claimed no official communication has been received from the NMC regarding the matter.
