The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and the Belagavi Deputy Commissioner in response to a complaint alleging that an industrial unit in Karnataka is polluting the Hiranyakeshi River in Maharashtra.
The matter was initially taken up by the NGT’s Western Zone bench last year. While issuing a notice to the Maharashtra authorities, the bench pointed out that the industry in Karnataka falls under the jurisdiction of the Southern Zone bench.
It sought clarification from the NGT’s principal bench in Delhi, which later ruled that both zonal benches could decide on the matter. The Southern Zone bench has now requested a response from the KSPCB and the Belagavi DC.
