A woman from Umarani village near Chikkodi in Karnataka’s Belagavi district has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband to protect their daughter from an attempted assault. The incident, reported on Thursday, has shocked the local community.
The deceased, identified as Srimantha Itnale, was reportedly killed by his wife, Savithri after he allegedly tried to harm their daughter. Police stated that Srimantha, known for his abusive behavior and frequent drinking, attempted to assault the child, prompting Savithri to intervene and attack him with a heavy object, resulting in his death.
To hide the evidence, Savithri allegedly disposed of his remains in a nearby farmland. She also cleaned the scene and hid the weapon, initially blaming the crime on an external group. However, villagers discovered the body and alerted the authorities, leading to her arrest.
During questioning, Savithri admitted to the act, stating that her daughter’s protection was the reason. Police investigations revealed a history of domestic violence, with Srimantha reportedly demanding money for alcohol and coercing his wife into degrading situations. The alleged attack on their daughter was the breaking point.
Authorities noted that Savithri had turned off her husband’s phone and instructed her daughter to remain silent. The case has highlighted the pressing need for accessible resources and protective measures for women and children in vulnerable situations.
