A man was brutally hacked to death during a compromise meeting held at the premises of Maruti Temple in Gandhi Nagar Layout on Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Suresh Bhimappa Bandiwaddar (36), a resident of Halkarni village in Khanapur taluk. Sources revealed that a long-standing rivalry existed between Suresh and Yallappa Bandiwaddar, a resident of Gandhi Nagar Layout.
The meeting was convened by local elders in an attempt to resolve the dispute between the two. However, during the discussion, a heated verbal exchange ensued between Suresh and Yallappa, which quickly escalated.
Amidst efforts by elders to pacify both parties, Yallappa, who was carrying a knife, stabbed Suresh in the stomach. He also attacked Sagar Aptekar and others who tried to intervene.
Suresh was initially rushed to the General Hospital in Khanapur, and later referred to Belagavi for further treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to excessive bleeding en route.
Following the incident, Yallappa (62) surrendered at the police station with the weapon used in the attack. Khanapur police have taken him into custody and are investigating the case.
