A person reportedly beat his relative to death on Sunday evening in Sutagatti village, Belagavi taluk, suspecting him of theft in his closed house.
The victim, identified as Rayappa Basavani Mannikeri (30) from Sutagatti, was allegedly murdered by the arrested suspect, Shetyappa Kallappa Mannikeri. Police sources state that Rayappa, known locally for his alcoholism and alleged thefts to support his habit, had no prior theft charges against him. Shetyappa, who had left his village for a few days, returned to find his house burglarized.
Shetyappa grew increasingly suspicious upon discovering the burglary and strongly believed Rayappa was the perpetrator. Rayappa was apprehended and interrogated by Shetyappa, leading to escalating verbal disputes and ultimately turning physical. In the altercation, Rayappa attempted to attack Shetyappa with a sickle, further provoking him. Subsequently, Shetyappa subdued Rayappa, restraining him to a pillar, but unfortunately, Rayappa did not survive his injuries. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings in the matter.
